Cramps
for the Mountaineer
Dear Fellow Mountain Climber,
It is my pleasure to
Congratulate you for taking the first step to a very challenging and
most rewarding trip-Climbing Mount
Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South
East Asia.
In January 2005, while we were
searching for information to plan our trip to Mount Kinabalu, we
realised that accurate, comprehensive and updated information about
Mount Kinabalu was simply not available. To benefit aspiring visitors
like yourself, I have specially compiled our first-hand experience,
observations and research into an eGuide-Discover the Untold
Truths to Climbing Mount Kinabalu.
Are
you searching now for one of these reasons?
- Are you planning for a
trip to climb Mount Kinabalu(Gunung Kinabalu) at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
in Malaysia? Are
you looking for information on tour packages and what
kind of preparation to make for the trip? Are you looking for climbing
tips to ensure that you have all the advantages to enjoy your climb and
reach the summit?
Are you finding out about other costs that will be incurred during the
trip?
- Are you looking towards
mountain climbing as a thrill and
hobby? Is this your first time climbing a Mountain?
It is
well-known that Mount Kinabalu standing at 4,095m is the best
mountain to climb for beginner. How do I know that? There are a
lot of mountains higher and more treacherous than Mount Kinabalu:
Kilimanjaro in East Africa, standing at 5,895m; Nepal mountains called
Himalayan Peaks are at least 5,500m in heights; and the highest Mount
Everest at 8,848m. Try Mount Kinabalu first and you will have a good
feel of how it is like to climb higher ones.
- Are you visiting Kota
Kinabalu soon? The saying
goes,"if you have not seen Mount Kinabalu, you have not seen South East
Asia yet." The summit of Mount Kinabalu is the most beautiful and
heavenly sight of South East Asia. It is just round the corner of
Kota Kinabalu. Don't miss out on the experience of climbing Mount
Kinabalu yourself! "Thanks again. I
just can't afford getting in
Malaysia without trying something to get up that great mountain. Your
ebook gave me an additional motivation for doing it." Charles
Langlois, Canada.
- Are you looking for a
family excursion? Instead of a
fishing trip, disneyland or a cruise, why not climb up Mount Kinabalu
together as a family? There were at least 5 families climbing during
our trip. One of them was a German in his fifies with his grown-up son.
Another indian
family climbed together in 3 generations- grandparents, son and
grandson. Imagine training together with your kids and spouse, to
prepare for the most memorable climbing moments of your family?
Bet your spouse and kids will treasure the memories of Mount Kinabalu
for years to come...
If
you are one of the above, let us take a Closer look at the
Facts...
- You could be spending
many hours looking for the right information, which are
scattered all over and some are just not available. Many travellers are
concerned with key information on how and where to spend their
money wisely, are you? By the way, we
realised a lot of important information only during and after our
climb! Too late...
- You may choose a tour
agent and let him do all the works.
Just pay up whatever price he asks for. So, he decides your costs and
fate. Is it possible to overpay your tour agent by more than $500, if you
are coming in from the other side of the world? Is it possible that you
may not be given the best deal and find yourself cramped into a small
hotel for the kind of money that you have paid?
- Tour agents are running a competitive business. If you may
not sign up for their tour package, will they answer your questions?
They might. Will they tell you the truth about overall cost,
preparation and what to expect during the trip? Without your business,
some might not even entertain you if you ask too much questions. Some
of your questions are so important to you but...not to them!
- The tour agent's job is to collect money to arrange your
trip for you. Whether you can climb
to the summit or not, is not his
business. If you have to make a comeback, the tour agent is more
than happy to do
business with you again! So, who are you likely to consult for climbing
tips to Mount Kinabalu? Friends, books, internet,...? Are you aware
that the tour agent also dish out climbing tips? Ours did too. When we
ask him when was the last time he climbed Mount Kinabalu, he told us
that he had never climb it before in his 7 years as tour agent!
- This is the First and
Only eGuide on climbing Mount Kinabalu available
in the market. At the click of the mouse, you can download the ebook
and bonus gifts.
I
will let you know what my Guide is Not!
- It is NOT a Guide that
just by reading it, it will guarantee that you will reach the
summit.
Nobody should ever offer a 100% guarantee, without putting a hook in
the mouth! With the 2nd Edition of 60
pages of
valued information in my practical guide based on my sharing of
our
experience, observations, research and feedbacks from
friends/customers, your chance
of success will be greatly increase.
- It is NOT able to predict
that you will not face torrential
rain and wild wind up in the summit. The information that I
provide
will help you to plan in such a way as to reduce your chance of facing
the extreme weather.
- It is NOT possible to stop
you from splurging at the spur of the moment, on luxiourious
indulgences, food and
souvenirs, especially to celebrate your victorious climb. However, you
should
easily keep your trip within your budget when you follow my advice.
- It is NOT 100% foolproof.
I have strive to be comprehensive, accurate and
updated as far as possible, so that you will save many hours of
your time and hundreds of your hard-earned money in your preparation of
the trip. Most importantly, GET IT
RIGHT THE FIRST TIME AND AVOID MAKING A COSTLY COMEBACK!
How
You will Benefit from my Practical Guide?
- Save
many hours of your time looking for the Right
information, with all the important information at your
fingertips. You will be shown exactly where you can save your money
effectively in your trip. Also, if you are going spend so much time on
looking for the
Right information, why not spend it more productively on your work or
business where some
of your income alone is at least US$200 per
day?
- YES,
you can Do-It-Yourself, without going through a tour
agent! I have devoted an entire chapter on how to Do-It-Yourself and
enjoy the flexibility of
planning your climbing schedule and save even more money than your
original
budget. No more upsetting your professional schedule to meet
rigid timetable of tour packages!
- Know exactly what are the
important items to prepare and buy. Mountain gears are very
expensive. If you buy the wrong item, you might just have to bear with
the consequence of using it. My wife had bought a good trekking shoe at
US$125.
Unfortunately, it was not suitable for climbing and she sprained
her ankles so badly that she had to limp most of her way down the
mountain. It would be costly if you have to replace the item again.
- Climbing Tips & Better
preparation in physical fitness and mentally. It is often those
who have a good idea of what to expect during the climb itself and
prepare themselves well physically and mentally, who will enjoy their
climbs and increase
their success rate of reaching the summit. In my eGuide, we share our First-Hand experience so that you climb
with an edge.
- Know where are the dangers
and exercise precautions
accordingly. Dangers lurk in the great mountain. It is important
to know them and have a safe climb.
Let
me share a little about our humble experience
What
motivated me to climb Kinabalu?
A
Priceless Gift for you…of a lifetime!
In January 2005, my
friend Alex suggested the idea of climbing Mount Kinabalu. The idea of
climbing the
highest mountain in South East Asia thrilled me. I had always wanted to
enjoy the experience of climbing a mountain and setting my foot
victoriously on its summit. Our wives got excited too! Are you too?
My Wife, Alice & Me
During the midnight climb
when it was cold, and the slope only got steeper and harder, there were
moments where I had wanted to give up the challenge. My legs started to
cramp and it took a lot of efforts to drag my feet one step at a time.
The mission was worthwhile.
When
the going got tough, the toughest part was to get it going. It reminded
me of those difficult, cloudy and darkest days of my life. Those were
the days where I learnt the most about myself and grew up. I had hung
on to the
hope inside me, kept going till the clouds cleared away and the sun
rose to light up my days.
I came down the
mountain with a new inspiration in my life.
To set out to conquer other mountains in my life, inspired by the
memory of my struggles up Mount
Kinabalu alive in my heart and mind till this very day…and for a long
time to come. The memory of Mount Kinabalu is the reason I started out
on this One-Stop
Practical Guide and the inspiration to finishing it. May this
inspiration of a lifetime be a priceless gift to you too when you set
your foot on its summit.
Getting
all the Wrong advices from Internet…
Guess what? Our findings
from searching the internet, looking at information from tour guide
booklets, asking our tour agent and interviewing some friends who had
conquered the mountain were very brief, fragmented and
insufficient.
We got some
feedbacks as
follow:
- “No need to prepare at all or bring much items there.
Just go and climb…”
- “It is very tough! You must be very fit to take on
the mountain. Suggest you climb up and down the stairs of a 30 storeys
building, with a full pack on your back, at least 3 times a week for 3
months. ”
- “Your normal water bottle cannot take the cold. The
plastic may melt inside. Bring thermos flask.” “You mean…plastic
melting in
extreme cold?” I asked.
Anyway, we had to rely on
what we could find and common sense to prepare ourselves. We went ahead
to
climb Mount Kinabalu on 16 March 2005 to 19 March 2005.
We barely made it! It was only by a stroke
of luck that we made it to the summit!
Big
Problems that only made the climb harder
Just to share with you a
few big problems my wife and me faced during the climb.
- We had such a hard time struggling up the mountain
with our loads that I surrendered my backpack to the porter, even
before the
¾ mark of the day climb!
- I fell sick and vomited finally at Laban Rata, just
before the midnight climb.
- We bought 2 new torches that did not function
properly and could not be used for the midnight climb. As a result, we
had to grope
in the dark for 3½ hours!
It would have been a more
fruitful and enjoyable climb if we were better informed. Through our
mistakes, we had become
experienced climbers. But why suffer
unnecessarily if you have a Choice? There
were about 40% who did not make it to the summit that day.
Issues
to Consider
To be well prepared, we
had to consider some of the key issues.
- How cold is it really up there? Any danger of
frostbite?
How thin is the air at the summit?
- How tough is the climbing? What are the dangers to
look out for?
- How do we
ensure comfortable and reasonable accommodations?
- How much money in total is it really going to cost
us? Abandoning the climb
without reaching the summit, is in fact
the most costly! The total cost will include the cost of the
trip alone, the opportunity loss of time and psychological which will
cost
no less than US$500!
Are we going to spend our precious time and money again to make a
comeback?
A climber from France
told me,
"I
gave up somewhere near the summit last year. This thing about making it
to the summit kept bugging me for the
whole year. I had no peace of mind! I had to make it this time round,
no matter what happen!"
